API layer & connectors
Platforms that give agents and apps authenticated access to hundreds of third-party APIs.
Connector platforms sit between an AI agent and the SaaS APIs it needs: Gmail, GitHub, Slack, CRMs and so on. They give the agent tool definitions it can call, and they hold each end user's credentials so the agent can act for that user. Projects differ in four main ways. They define integrations either as declarative JSON or as hand-written servers. They expose tools to the agent through REST function calling, MCP or framework SDKs, and many handle large catalogs with tool search. Their credential storage ranges from a token file on disk to multi-tenant, KMS-encrypted linked accounts. And they differ in how much needs a vendor's cloud. When you choose one, check which OAuth flows you can run without the vendor and whether credentials are refreshed when a tool runs. Also check whether retries, rate limits and event triggers exist in the code or only in the hosted product.

Comparison questions
Each question is answered separately for every project in this category, from that project's source code.
- How is third-party authentication implemented?OAuth2 flows, API keys, token refresh, credential storage and encryption, multi-tenant connected accounts.
- How is an integration / connector defined?Manifest or schema format; code vs config; codegen from OpenAPI; versioning; how many integrations ship.
- How are integrations exposed to LLM agents?MCP servers, function-calling schemas, SDKs per framework; tool search / dynamic tool loading.
- How is a tool call executed?Proxy vs direct; sandboxing; rate limiting; retries; pagination; error mapping.
- How are data sync, webhooks and triggers implemented?Scheduled syncs; incremental cursors; webhook ingestion; event triggers for agents.
- How is it self-hosted and what is open vs proprietary?Licence; which components are in the repo; required services; what needs the hosted cloud.
